Brooklyn born and raised, Anais is a mashup of Brooklyn arts and culture from the 70s, 80s and 90s, with one of her parents hailing from Detroit Michigan, a Jazz saxophonist, and another parent migrating to NYC from Central America.
Born in Crown Heights, Anais was born in a household steeped in music and art. Anais is a jack-of-all-trades within artist expression. For the past 13 years, Anais has worked as a restoration artist within the stained-glass industry. She has restored and painted hundreds of stained glass windows for large contracts like Yale University, Presbyterian Church, Columbia University and the Eldridge Street Synagogue .
Prior to working in stained glass, she worked for many years within the natural hair care industry, taking private clients at her home and also working on site at several hair studios such as LocSmyths African Loc Groomers, Tendrils Hair Spa, and Levels Barber Shop. With a concentration in Loc care, maintenance and styling, Anais has evolved and grown from apprentice level in the mid 90’s to a Master Loctician at present.
In 2001, she had the privilege of apprenticing under Ona Osirio-Maat, Master Loctician and creator of the LocSmyths Method. The LocSmyths Method is a technique used for starting and maintaining locs, in which the hair is teased up and wrapped. This technique differs from other methods of starting locs, because a “solid”, matted coil is created in contrast to the typical “hollow” coil, or curl method. As a result, the hair locs must faster and a solid, fortified base is formed. When using this method in mature, already formed locs, the “new growth” at the root is teased up and wrapped around the base of the loc to fortify and create a uniform, seamless look. This strengthens the hair over time and gives the individual loc a smooth, unfrayed and more manicured appearance from root to tip. Anais continues to use this method to this day.
Anais’ loc styles have been featured in Essence magazine and Braids and Beauty magazine.
Anais believes all things are connected. Whether she is urban farming on a rooftop garden, creating beadwork, painting and restoring stained glass, or caring for people’s crowns and sculpting loc styles, they all require love, nurturing and a steady hand.
She is available for consultation and any hair health questions or concerns.
