Camera Ready Kutz, Inc. was Established November 2007 by Trinidad born/Brooklyn-based Master Barber and entrepreneur, Khane Kutzwell. Khane’s passion for barbering started after hearing stories from LGBTQIA folks about sub-par treatment at neighborhood barbershops. Some were being denied service, there were complaints of hateful treatment and comments made as well as simply not getting the type of hairkut they asked for. Determined to create a place where EVERYONE could safely and comfortably enjoy the classic barbershop experience, Khane enrolled in a barbering program, turned one of her bedrooms into a shop and has been cutting hair ever since -- not only in NYC, but also in California, Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore, New Jersey, Detroit & Canada...so far.
In November of 2017, the 10th year anniversary of Khane kutting, a client, his girlfriend & her parents offered Khane a loan to take the next step of her journey...Thanks to their generosity and belief in her mission, Khane was able to finally open a brick and mortar location for Camera Ready Kutz, Inc. The shop is located at 73 Utica Ave between Pacific and Dean Streets in Crown Heights, Brooklyn NY. Khane now has 3 other barbers and 1 beautician working along side her serving the continuously growing clientele.
I thought to myself, "I'm a barber...what the heck do I sell?!?!?" Thankfully I had about 10-12 other entrepreneurs before me. I continued thinking, "Ok...I sell hair grease, incense that I make, soaps, accessories...No, No, No!!...that doesn't say anything about barbering or what my business is really about!". I panicked!!...My turn was now 3 classmates away! I took a breath...relaxed...and thought about my clients...
I quickly visualized them coming in and sitting in my chair, then visualized their reactions after seeing their new kut...It's now my turn to speak and I GOT IT!!! "I Sell Self Esteem.", I said with pride. My instructor smiled, congratulating my answer. He said he had no idea what I could possibly say (LOL) and my classmates nodded their heads in agreement.
I will never forget that day. That answer has been one of the major driving forces for why it's important to me to have a shop where all of the hair care professionals provide extraordinary service and constantly refine their skills.
