Bio

Born in Trinidad, raised in Far Rockaway, Queens, the now Brooklyn-based Master Barber, speaker and entrepreneur, Khane Kutzwell is living out one of her goals of creating an open and inviting space for folks to come get a kut. Khane’s barbering adventure started after hearing stories from LGBTQIA folks about sub-par treatment at neighborhood barbershops. Some were being denied service, there were complaints of hateful treatment and comments made and not getting the type of hairkut they asked for. Determined to create a place where EVERYONE could safely and comfortably enjoy the classic barbershop experience, Khane enrolled in a barbering program, turned one of her bedrooms into a shop and has been cutting hair ever since -- not only in NYC, but also in California, Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore & New Jersey.

Bio

"Since 1992 I have been taking care of all textures of hair. In High School my girlfriends would ask me to do their hair...So I did, then in college I would find myself doing hair for my dorm mates. This is also when I had my hair cut into a Gumbi (a hairstyle named after and in the shape of the popular tv character). I learned to maintain that Gumbi for myself with three mirrors, a pick, a comb and clippers. In 1991 My daughter was born. This is when I decided to become a Cosmetologist."

"I don’t believe in the old adage “Pain is beauty”. Hair care and precision cuts has always been my focus. I feel it’s important to show and explain to my clients how their hair grows and the best products, from shampoo to styling aids, that are best for their hair texture, length, color and style. I sell the products I use. Hair care is a team effort.
My dream as a young stylist was to work at Vidal Sassoon Salon. I applied and interviewed 5 times. The last time I interviewed I was on my way out of town with my family. As we drove down I95 I decided ‘I will train me’. I knew kinky and relaxed hair. So I went to work in Manhattan to learn about more textures of hair. I started at Dramatics for Hair, I studied at Jingles International as an assistant. This is where I honed my hair cutting, coloring and hair care conversations with clients. After this I became a hairstylist."
Precision hair cuts and proper styling while educating your clients on the product you choose for them is very important. I always educate my clients so that they know how to apply products and how to take care of a style in-between the gym and work and life. Now, they can maintain the style and cut properly. The client will get more out of the style as it grows out because of cutting techniques and appreciate you more for the product knowledge.
What I enjoy most about being a hair stylist is having the ability to make people feel and look good. I enjoy styling, cutting , weaving, coloring and simply hair care. I “Specialize in Styling Your hair”
“You have to enjoy what you do or you won’t perform your best. Hair stylist must remember they are in someone’s head. They look good and feel good because of your hands” ...AyabaBreathe

Bio

Val has been in the beauty industry over 16 years. This Chicago native is a licensed Cosmetologist and Barber. Passionate about giving quality service to everyone, she loves making people look and feel their absolute best. She began her career working as an assistant to a master braider in a natural haircare salon on the city’s South Side. There she learned how to braid in a manner that promotes healthy hair growth within a protective style. In addition to this, she became a loctician, providing starter locs, loc maintenance, and loc styles. In the Valley of the Sun she continued to offer natural hair services and braids which led her to open a salon and acquire more education in beauty.  As a Cosmetology instructor for International Academy and Toni and Guy in Tempe and Scottsdale Arizona, she taught theory of Cosmetology and advanced techniques in precision hair cutting and hair coloring. She moved back to the Midwest and worked as a stylist in one of the top natural hair salons in Chicago. There she learned how to install loc extensions, use locstitch and crochet methods, and was inspired to learn more about men’s grooming. Upon enrollment in barber school is where she garnered a high respect for all facets of barbering, especially the art of shaving. When the clippers are off, you’ll find her knitting or writing poetry. She loves vegan food and subway rides. Now fulfilling a lifelong dream of moving to New York, her journey continues here at Camera Ready Kutz.

Imagine it’s Friday night and you just get out of work. You made big plans with a bunch of people earlier in the week and the time has finally come. You cashed your check, got your outfit picked out and the shoes to match. All you need now is a fresh cut and you’re good to go! You walk by one barber shop and reach to open the door but it’s locked. You see barbers and customers inside so you knock...only to be met with fingers waving no and hand gesture that say keep it moving. Okay, keep walking. You hear some loud thumping music coming from down the block so you naturally walk towards it cuz you wanna see what’s going on and boom! Another barber shop! You look in the window and see 1 person getting a cut but about 12 dudes hangin around smoking hookah and the one barber that is working is taking a break to sip a Corona. What??? You walk in anyway cuz it’s getting late and you don’t have much time. Everyone turns to look at you and stops what they’re doing. You hear some inaudible chatter and snickers and are immediately uncomfortable. The kind of feeling that evokes that “fight, flight or freeze” response. I froze but I knew if I didn’t get a cut now I wouldn’t get one in time to go out. I approach one barber who’s sitting down and ask if he took walk ins and he begrudgingly said yes. I took a deep breath and sat down. I told him the kind of cut I wanted and he nodded ok. While he was cutting he kept stopping to look at his phone and chat with the other guys. They were speaking Spanish and I couldn’t understand all of it but the bits and pieces I picked up were crass and that’s being polite. I get my haircut once a week and I’ve always been fascinated by the culture but in that moment I knew that I wanted to actually pursue barbering. I thought about all the humans in my community and how uneasy they might feel in spaces like the one I was in. The barber that cut my hair did a great job in terms of cutting but the atmosphere and energy in the shop made me never go back.

All I wanna do is make make people feel warm and welcomed when they sit in my chair and the vibe inside Camera Ready Kutz allows me to do just that while making you look fresh! I’m so grateful for the opportunity to work along side major talent in this safe space!

***Not only will you find E. The Barber behind a chair here at Camera Ready Kutz, Inc., you'll find her behind the bar at Henrietta Hudson in The Village serving you the BOMB drinks!!***
